Strategic Cruisers were the first tech III ships to be released. They require the use of five subsystems, which determine its role bonuses, slot layout and hardpoints, among other things. They are built not only from regular minerals, but also from fullerene gas harvested in wormhole space; researching the blueprints requires reverse engineering ancient relics with datacores from wormhole space sites, and an Experimental Laboratory. Due to their modular nature they can fill a variety of roles, but they are, when the subsystems are taken into account, the most expensive ships in their size category. Having your Strategic Cruiser destroyed is a traumatic process not just because of the loss of the asset itself, but because it causes a loss of skill points. A doomed Strategic Cruiser pilot will therefore frequently eject before being destroyed.
