Given their huge cargohold, freighters allow pilots to move vast amounts of material from system to system, entire fleets of ships and their modules in their hold. However, they do have some specific limitations in what they can carry. For instance, they can not carry any unpackaged container except for the general freight container which was designed for freighter class vessel. Bear in mind that this type of container is only used for separating good since it can store the same amount of item than it take space in the freighter's cargohold.

Freighters are also limited in how they can transfert material to or from their cargohold while in space. Unlike other ships, Freighters can not jettison their cargo in space. They can only transfert it at a POS. And finally, they can only scoop the cargo of a destroyed freighter or jump freighter in space.

They are capital sized ships and are very slow to move. They also have a very low warp speed. If a friend is in the same corporation as you, he can speed the warp initiation phase by using a webifier on your freighter.

They do not have any fitting or rig slot and thus they can not be upgraded in any way.

Freighters are quite expensive but given their huge cargo size they have become a major backbone of the Eve industry. Since they can carry quite a lot of valuable equipment, they are common PVP targets. For their defense, they rely on their massive hull structure hitpoint to soak damage. In empire space, Concord authorities will help in dealing with perpetrator of unlawful acts.

However, given a sufficiently committed team of ships against an especially juicy freighter, the capsuleer will lose both a useful ship and a very valuable cargo.
