Archaeological Sites and the Archaeologist Profession

What is Archaeology and what are Archaeological Sites?

Archaeology is a mini profession where you "analyze" or "salvage" locked structures at Archaeological sites. Analyzed structures contain item rewards. Salvaged structures contain salvage. Certain sites within Wormhole space will require the modules and skills for archaeology as well.

Where can I find Archaeological Sites?

You can find Archaeological sites at various Racial COSMOS systems and you can find them through Exploration.

What do I need?

Modules

In order to analyze, you will need to fit an Analyzer module onto your ship.

In order to salvage, you will need to fit a Salvager Module onto your ship.

Skills

In order to use the analyzer module, you will need the Archaeology skill.

In order to use the salvager module, you will need the Salvaging skill.

Please note: There are some containers that you will not be able to open unless you have at least a certain minimum level of the relevant skill.

Every level increases the per-cycle chance of a successful open on the container. Most pilots recommend training the skill to level 4 in order to be able to open all containers. Also, at level 5 the Tech 2 variants of the modules become usable. The bonus over the Tech 1 variants is small, but quickly amortizes over a large amount of use.

Probes

In order to find Exploration Archaeology Sites you will need probes. Please see the Apocrypha Probing guide for details on probing in the Post-Apocrypha Eve Universe.

Archaeological sites have magnetometric signatures.

Each site has its own name, which can be viewed by changing to the Solar System view in the map. The name indicates which pirate faction will guard the site or other details that can be used to lookup the more common sites. High-security system Archaeology Sites are seldom guarded.

I have found a site, how do I use it?

Once you have found an site:

Warping towards the site a pop-up window will tell you the name and the icon picture to the left will indicate whether you are going to need a salvager or analyzer and the appropriate skills for those devices to obtain items from cans located in the site.

  1. On the overview some structures will be in space that have the same icons as cargo containers. Approach to within 2.5km of one of these containers. You may notice that if you try and open these containers, you will get a message stating that its locked, this is why you need the Analyzer, to unlock it!
  2. Target and lock the structure. Once you have a lock, and have it selected, activate the Analyzer module on your ship. It may take several module cycles to hack open the container, so be patient. Once successfully opened, you will receive a message indicating a successful open and the module will deactivate.
  3. You will may need to clear out the NPC rats. Usually you will not see any rats when you enter a site, particularly in high-security space. Once a container is being analyzed or salvaged, the spawns may start. This is particularly important in drone and sleeper sites which have warp scrambling rats in their fleets.
  4. After a successful analysis or salvage, you will now be able to open the container, grab the loot, and proceed to the next container. Once all of the containers have been analyzed and looted, head home with the spoils.
Please note: These sites will despawn after you interact with them by attempting to use the archaeological tools above, and then leave the site. This occurs even if you were not successful in opening the cans.

As in a mission, despawn of an archaeology site includes despawning of any minable asteroids. Wrecks will remain and can be returned to if a bookmark is set for one of them. See the COSMOS and Complexes pages for information on how they spawn and despawn.

What sort of rewards should I expect from an Archaeological Site?

The rewards for these sites usually fall under the following categories:

  • Research Technology Skill books
  • Tech 1 Faction items
  • Salvage parts for making Rigs
  • Mission-specific items for COSMOS missions
  • Currently 2.00/5
