The Sleeper - Jovian Connection
Author: Myyona (CEO; Ataraxia Pharmacies)
AbstractGiven the current evidence available there appears to be strong historical and sociological connections between the Jovian and Sleeper societies. The attempts to find a cure for the lethal Jovian Disease forced a separation of the two groups, where the Sleepers used their expertise in virtual worlds to prolong the grave state of depression caused by the disease. To find a permanent cure, the Sleepers went on a quest to reconstruct their corrupted DNA; the cause of the disease. For this they needed unmodified DNA from other ethnic groups which eventually lead to the eradication of the Yan Jung Nation. Unsuccessful in solving the DNA mystery with specimens from New Eden alone, the Sleepers constructed huge Motherships and star gates to take them far beyond New Eden into w-space. There they continued their DNA research on the Talocans, a race untainted by the massive radiation emitted by the collapse of the EVE Gate. Seemingly, this research was either unfruitful or is still ongoing thereby making the final fate of the Sleepers unknown.
IntroductionEver since the Seyllin Incident in YC111[1] and the appearance of the first wormholes leading to an unknown sector in space, known as w-space, containing ancient structures from the Sleeper and Talocan civilizations researchers all over New Eden have been wondering what the connections are between Sleepers, Talocans and w-space. Some believe the Sleepers and Talocans were two different groups within the same society alike to the situation between capsuleers and the common population of today.[2] Others claim that the Sleepers are the ancestors of the Jovians.[3] It is our hypothesis that the truth is closer to the second proposal than the former, and that the Sleepers are a splinter group of Jovians that travelled to w-space in an attempt to use the Talocans to repair their corrupted DNA and by such cure themselves of the lethal Jovian Disease. This paper will present the findings we believe support our theory.
The Jovian DiseaseThe Jovian Disease is said to have appeared during the reign of the First Jovian Empire or even before that during what is known as the "Shrouded Days".[4] The disease is genetic in nature and is the result of the Jovians tampering with their DNA to such an extent that they no longer are capable of reversing it. The disease is lethal to Jovians within a period of only a few days up to weeks.[4] The symptoms of the disease is a grave state of depression and one could speculate if being hooked up in a virtual world were all worries could be washed away, such as the Sleepers are rumored to have created[5], could have been an immediate remedy and perhaps extending the span of the disease majorly. Though it would not be a permanent cure; to completely reconstruct the DNA that had been broken the Jovians would need the "original blueprints", unaltered DNA from another group of humans.
The Yan Jung NationIt is unclear when exactly the Sleeper group split from the Jovian Empire. Some indications, such as the presence of Jovian Motherships (more on this later), indicate that the Sleeper group could have been among the part of the Jovians that was left behind with the Jovian Disease when the Jovians relocated out of the Heaven constellation by the end of the Second Jovian Empire.[6] The dating of certain relics seem to indicate that the split happened a lot earlier, but we know for a fact that the Sleepers has a permanent presence in the Ani constellation at one time due to the vast number of artifacts and ruins they left behind there.[7] The Ani constellation lies within a few jumps to the Algintal constellation which is known to have been the home of an advanced human civilizations that had persisted since the closure of the EVE Gate; the Yan Jung nation.[8] It is possible the Sleepers went to the Yan Jungs with the intention of asking for help, but looking at the strong defensive nature of the Yan Jung devices left behind, such as the Force Repeller[9] and the Gargoyle Sentinel[10] and the fact that there has never been a recorded incident of the Jovians asking anybody for help it is much more likely that the Sleepers took what they came for by force.
Going BeyondDr. Akalayan and Dr. Kenitawri made a startling discovery some years ago when they discovered that two pieces of fractal acceleration shell equalizers (used in star ship engines) bare a similarity in design and age even though one had been recovered from an undisclosed in w-space and the other from an excavation site on Matar.[11] It is important to notice that the only people known to be able to produce ship of this size that could have been built around this time period were the Jovians and their Motherships.[6] There is a slight problem with the sources though, as it is claimed that the Jovian Motherships "were the first Titan-class ships ever built" and their construction first took place by the end of the Second Jovian Empire only around 510 years ago[6] while Dr. Akalayan and Dr. Kenitawri findings suggest ships of at least equal size had been constructed much earlier during the late Yan Jung time period fourteen to fifteen thousand years ago.[12] It is further possible the huge ships the Sleepers utilized were classed as something different than Titans. Besides the obvious interesting fact that a piece from a ship that could easily be used for mass migration has been found in w-space while another identical piece was found only three jumps away from the Ani constellation it is also interesting to note that these ships were constructed in the late Yan Jung era or shortly after.[12] This is again a strong indication that the final fate of the Yan Jung nation is strongly connected with the presence of the Sleepers nearby. It maybe also explains the answer to why the Sleepers had to go to and seek out the Talocans for untainted DNA when there were plenty of other human settlements in New Eden. Maybe they tried with other smaller societies first, now lost and forgotten, but apparently they never found what they were looking for. Possibly the massive amount of radiation that happened during the collapse of the EVE Gate, which still continues until present day albeit in smaller amounts[13], in some way contaminated the genome of all humans in New Eden while the Talocans, who settled in a different galaxy far away[14], were unaffected. The full extent of that theory is outside the scope for this paper. Whatever it was their original plan or not, the Sleepers constructed a number of portals in system of Traun in a deadpsace pocket which many years later would be conquered by the Nefantar during the Minmatar Rebellion until finally be taken over by the Angel Cartel.[15] Pieces of these portals[16] have been studied in cooperation with Sister Patrenn of SoE and evidence strongly suggests these to have been created far before the Nefantar inhabited the pocket.[17] It is very likely the Sleepers constructed these portals with the purpose of reaching w-space. It should be further noted that Seyllin lies in close proximity to both the Algintal and Ani. Whatever happened during the Seyllin Incident that enabled access to w-space the Sleepers perhaps used the same for their portals.
The Talocans and W-spaceIt is our belief that the Talocan civilization never really settled in New Eden, but, staying true to their migrant culture[18] quickly moved beyond. The Talcon ruins identified in the Devil's Dig Site deapsace pocket in the Otitoh system does not give the impression that the Talocans ever settled permanently in the system.[19] The only structures they left behind is a temple, which has been modified to such an extent by rogue drones that its original purpose has been lost and a Black Monolith designated "Sun Reader". We believe the Talocans erected these Black Monoliths as navigation beacons for their interplanetary travels which is emphasized the location of a Black Monolith in the Dead End system, close to the EVE Gate, as well as the multitudes of Black Monoliths discovered at various locations in w-space.[20][21]
Finding a CureConsidering the might of the Jovian Empires and their inability to find a cure for the Jovian Disease, it is no wonder why the Sleepers erected such a massive research network in w-space for the same task. It is difficult to know if the Talocans still existed as a society when the Sleepers showed up, but it is certain that if they did the Sleepers eventually destroyed the Talocan civilization in the attempt to fix their own corrupted DNA. While some Talocan settlements were turned into quarantine zones, where the Sleepers could attempt to reconstruct the circumstances that lead to the Jovian Disease, other sites were used for processing and storing the vast amount of the data the research provided.[21] As example, Sleeper databanks were placed near Talocan settlements for monitoring and storage purposes. Other sites were used to gather solar energy, used to power their buildings, while others again were used for the construction and maintenance of the Sleeper drones. Due to the need to be hooked into a virtual world to survive the Sleepers utilized these drones as their representatives in the physical world. Whether the Sleepers are directly controlling these drones or not is questionable, especially considering their need for the virtual world and the research they appear to have been doing on emergent artificial intelligence.[22][23] Note that the Jovians are known for having been studying in this field too.[24] While some Sleeper sites appear to be constructed for security reasons[21] it does not appear like the Talocans put much of a fight when the Sleepers invaded. The lack of remnants of Talocan weaponry suggests the race perhaps was of a pacifist kind or did not expect to get invaded. It is also interesting that the Sleeper drones do not appear to take notice of capsuleers entering w-space, erecting starbase towers near the moons or places small colonies on the planets. Only when the Sleeper or Talocan assets are being directly threatened do the drones take action. This shows what the Sleepers found important and that their interest stop outside of safeguarding their own research. There is no indication, or reason if this hypothesis is true, that the Sleepers should have any interest in returning to New Eden, even less invade, before a cure has been discovered. The Sleeper research site known as The Mirror contains a lot of clues on what the Sleepers were researching such as those topics already mentioned; genetics, solar power and artificial intelligence.[22] It is our guess the term “mirror” refers to the fact that these site are data mirrors of each other and all containing the latest progress of the Sleepers research. All things considered, it does not appear the Sleepers managed to find a cure for the Jovian Disease, but their machines are still working on processing the research data until the day it happens, if ever.
Discussion and ConclusionIt should be remembered that due to wide genetic manipulation of their own emotions and feelings, the Jovians and, by extent, Sleeper perception of evil and good might differ a lot from all other humans.[4] The Sleepers likely saw their actions as the only possible way of their own survival and that justified any kind of genocide they might "accidently" have caused. Some important questions remain though with the most important one being; what happened to the Sleepers? One could also question if the Sleepers have in fact become extinct. As we currently have not been able to penetrate the seamless armor that cover the Sleeper Enclaves[25] it is difficult to tell with certainty what happened to this ancient civilization and if they are still waiting in their virtual world until their machines has finished processing the data and a cure had been found. This highlights a disturbing issue; are the components capsuleers bringing out containing information regarding this cure especially those items covered by the Vitrauze Agreement?[26] It is quite obvious that the group most interested in such information would be the Jovians, especially considering their keen interest in any knowledge[4], but as they have made no public appearance about such one can only guess they are working below the radar. Further, if the Sleepers were studying how to create the Jovian Disease, in order to cure it, such information could very dangerous in the hands of the wrong people. We believe that the findings in this paper are best supporting our hypothesis about the connection between the Sleepers and the Jovians and the events that unfolded between them millennia ago. It is given that some interpretations could be wrong, but with the given facts currently available on the ancient races this theory is the one most solid founded in our opinion. The search a cure to the Jovian Disease brought the downfall of both the Yan Jung and Talocan civilizations and the Sleepers have been patiently waiting in w-space ever since for their machines to crack the human genome and figure out how to fix their corrupted DNA. Though, whatever the final fate of the Sleepers will be is in the hands of the current force elite of New Eden, the capsuleers.
