Abstract

The Jovian society was one of the first to recover after the closure of the EVE Gate that nearly caused a complete extinction of all human settlements in New Eden. Having existed for thousands of years since then, the Jovian Empire has had it peaks and falls far before any of the other currently existing empires managed to establish themselves. Being keen seekers of knowledge the Jovians possess great insight on past events, though not an insight they share freely and easily with outsiders. This paper looks into the documentation available on the history of the Jovian Empires in an attempt to better understand the Jovian mentality and the current state of the Jovian society. Recent lack of communication from Jovian officials as well as the inability to stop the fatal Jovian Disease might have brought the Jovian Empire to the brink of extinction.

Introduction

This article is a short summation of our knowledge on the history of the three Jovian Empires. The amount of available sources are small which is undoubtedly related to the Jovians reclusive nature, but also due to the fact that the Jovians have an obsession with gathering and keeping knowledge for themselves.[1]

First Jovian Empire

The tale of the Jovian Empires reaches as far back as to the collapse of the EVE Gate. Even though the collapse of the EVE Gate had a negative effect on the Jovian society, as well as all other societies in New Eden, the effect was only minor, contrary to the rest of New Eden, and the Jovians quickly recovered back to a state of high-tech society within a few centuries.[1] This marked the beginning of the First Jovian Empire which would last for nine millennia. The eventual downfall of this empire was brought about by the Jovian Elders, though the exact details are shrouded in mystery.[2]

A likely contributor to the downfall could be the Jovian Disease which is said to have appeared as a result of the "Shrouded Days" where the otherwise strict Jovian governmental control over genetic alterations was lost for a few generations.[1] Being the government at the time, it is likely the Jovian Elders are being blamed or took the blame for this mistake, rightfully or not. A translation of an old Jovian poem states that the intent of the genetic alterations was "to touch the face of perfection" and the Jovian Disease was the "punishment" for trying to do so.[3] Like the Second Jovian Empire, the First had its base in the Curse region, Heaven constellation[4], but being in prosperous state it is likely the Jovians exerted influence and perhaps settled far beyond the borders of this region. The previously mentioned Jovian poem describes this state as the Jovians having the power to "bent stars to their will" and their "reach was infinite".[3]

Second Jovian Empire

The Jovians where reunited in the Second Jovian Empire under the leadership of Miko Bour[1] and lasted approximately 2500 years.[4] In a desperate attempt to finally rid themselves of the Jovian Disease, as no cure was found, the Jovians decided to abandon their home worlds in Curse and settle in the regions J7HZ-F and A821-A where their third (and current) Empire is residing to this day. It is interesting to note that little to no records tell about what happened with those Jovians left behind, though certain people speculate a direct connection with the Sleeper civilization.[5]

Third Jovian Empire

The current of the Jovian Empires has prevailed for a bit more than 500 years. Despite the reallocation of home worlds the Jovian Disease is still prevalent among the Jovian society continuing their steady decline.[6] Since introducing capsuleer technology to the Caldari[7], defeating the Amarr at The Battle of Vak-Atioth[7] and participate in the establishing of CONCORD[8], the Jovians have become more and more reclusive on the interplanetary political scene with very little public communication with the other empires. The last couple of events involving direct Jovian political activity were the escape and hunt down of the renegade Jovian admiral Ouria in YC105[9] and the development of a Meta-Molecular Transportation Device that could immediately transport a whole person from one end of the star cluster to the other in YC106.[10] Unfortunately the device malfunctioned causing the Jovian ambassador, who was using it at the time, to have his body parts spread all over the cluster which had the Jovians asking for assistance from the other empires in collecting enough parts in order to revive the ambassador.[11] The Caldari State succeeded in mobilizing most capsuleers for this task and was recognized by the Jovian government for its efficiency[12] and the ambassador was fully revived.[13]

Not totally isolationists, the Jovians still conduct business and trade with people outside of their empire through corporations like Genolution[14] and X-Sense.[15] Approximately three hundred years ago the Jovian Ior Labron established the Society of Conscious Thought which still welcomes a limited number of foreign students into their academies each year.[16]

Discussion and Conclusion

The current state and future prospects of the current Jovian Empire are little known. So little information has emitted from Jovian officials lately that one could speculate that the Jovian race was about to become extinct. Though still seemingly technological superior to any other faction in New Eden, the Jovians inability to cure themselves of the Jovian Disease might have brought the Empire to a situation where it can no longer function as a society. This would be a dangerous situation as there are plenty of other factions that would be eager to get their hands on Jovian technology for less noble causes, as the Heaven constellation is a grim example of. It is without a doubt a very fortunate thing that the Jovians managed to cut the space lanes and safeguard their technology while they still could, both for themselves and for the rest of mankind.
