Clearer descritption of the mechanics of adding a member

I've just started a new corp, and I can't for the life of me see how to get someone I know to join me. You've decided you want someone in your corporation. What do you do next? Is getting the recruit to click on "apply to join" in the corporation info window the only way? Is there no way to invite people whilst having applications disabled?
