What is EVE Online?
The fancy version:
EVE Online is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMORPG) that takes place approximately 20.000 years after our times in a region of space on the far end of the universe. When you join EVE you assume the role of a freshly graduated "Capsuleer," a relatively small group of elite pilots capable of controlling powerful spaceships on their own from within their capsules. Capsuleers are often referred to as "The Immortals" due to the fact that the highly advanced capsules they are connected to are capable of instantly transferring their consciousness to a clone of themselves in the case of physical destruction.
The down to earth version:
EVE Online is a community of over 370,000 players doing fun, crazy and disastrous things with and to each other in an award-winning virtual universe. Outside of the game world, whether hanging out at player gatherings, partying in Iceland at EVE Fanfest or pitching in to make the world a better place, the players of EVE Online display a camaraderie and creativity that is truly most impressive.

So, where does the monocle fit in?
The right eye socket. That's probably not the answer you were looking for, so after taking a gander at this distinctive looking fellow sporting a monocle, read on to discover the story of the monocle.
On June 21st, the Incarna expansion went live, introducing an entirely new dimension to EVE Online - incredible 3D avatars and their interactive station environments, Captain's Quarters. For players looking for further customization and a more unique look for their avatar, the Noble Exchange was created to allow players to convert their PLEX to a form of in-game currency in order to purchase clothing and accessories not available in the default character creator.
Among them was the "Looking Glass" Ocular Implant. That may seem like a rather pretentious way to say monocle but, honestly, pretense is just one of the many great reasons to own one.
However, the monocle is a small part of the Incarna expansion, and Incarna is just one of EVE Online's fourteen expansions since its original release in 2003.

EMPYREAN AGE - The four major Empires of EVE have broken their long-standing peace and are marshaling their forces for war. The outcome hinges on the actions of the galaxy's immortal pod pilots, allowing players to direct the course of the conflict.

RED MOON RISING - Blueprints for over 30 new ships, including several new Tech 2 and Capital variants kick things up a massive notch in both the battlefields and the shipyards.
COLD WAR - Outposts, freighters and dreadnaughts. If it's epic in design, it rolled into New Eden this Summer.
EXODUS - Destroyers and battlecruisers and mining barges... oh my!
CASTOR - Everything you use and love got an upgrade or improvement. Castor delivers the player-owned conquerable station.
SECOND GENESIS - From the feature page: "...your main tools will include a diverse array of sophisticated equipment, spaceships, and social interfaces, but you’ll also need a strong business acumen, cunning combat strategies, and often pure Machiavellian thinking." Little did anyone know just how far CCP and the EVE community would end up taking that to heart and running (rampantly) away with it.
