Structure

Other then most mainly industrially oriented Alliances the ISS did not rely exclusively on militia forces formed by their member corporations but employed a standing Navy that received funding from the Alliance.

The duty of the ISSN was to protect the ISS Outposts, the surrounding space and the trade routes leading to them from pirates and other attackers, thereby upholding the ISS's ideal of a free space with access to all peaceful travelers, explorers and traders. The ISSN employed a strikt NRDS policy. In times of bigger crisises the ISSN formed the core of the ISS fleet and fullfilled intelligence, logistics and command functions.

The ISS Navy employed a formal rank structure to reward and encourage pilots "stepping up to the plate" and assuming leadership positions. Ranks reached from Midshipman to Admiral of the Fleet which usually was the CEO or the corporation.

Life in the ISS Navy

The ISS Navy acted as a stepping stone into PvP for many pilots due to the low entry requirements and the ship reimbursement scheme that covered a variety of t1 fitted ships up to BS size (provided they were lost in an organized operation). Apart from that the ISSN attracted experienced PvPers eager to teach others the ropes of combat.

Due to the ISS public outposts being spread out throughout the Eve cluster with stations in Catch, Providence and Pure Blind the ISSN pilots lead a nomadic life relocating to a new base or "hot zone" every couple months.

The (at that time) newly introduced concept of jump clones combined with tactical ship reserves at every station allowed for flexibility in deployment in cases of emergencies.

Conflicts and Wars

Its main purpose being PvP the ISSN was constantly involved in conflicts of varying sizes against all entities conducting piracy around ISS public outposts or in the spacelanes leading to them. This included constant patrols around the outposts in 0.0 space as well as empire wars to discourage attacks on ISS civilian ships in empire space.

The most notable big conflicts the ISS and ISSN were involved in:

The pirate Invasion of 9UY4-H

The ISSN assisted the Ushra'Khan Alliance when their outpost came under siege by a coalition of pirate corporations, The Establishment, The Coalition of Carebear Killers and Veto among them.

Since the 9UY4-H system was controlling two major routes to the ISS outposts in the vicinity for the ISS this was not only an act of assistance to a friendly neighbor but also a question of securing their own assets.

ISS involvement and ISSN personal taking the lead role in the conflict over extended periods of time brought the pirate assault to a standstill but only the involvement of the MC later could break the stalemate in favor of the defenders.

Fighting alongside Ushra'Khan in this conflict founded a special relationship between the ISS and them which lasted till the termination of the ISS as an alliance and in some cases even extended past this time, most notable in form of the relationship between The Littlest Hobos and Ushra'Khan.

The war between IAC and ISS

This war is generally viewed as the main factor in starting the first "Great Southern War" where the ISS fought alongside Lotka Voltera, FIX and the MC against IAC, Goonswarm and AAA.
