Are there events in EVE?

There are in-game events, many of which encourage player-versus-player competition along the lines of race, bloodline, political standing; i.e. Amarr vs. Minmatar and such. This way they are rooted in the background element of the game, but still distinctly PvP in nature.

Some smaller events emphasize PvP play in scenarios such as localized threats, courier missions, smuggling runs, so on and so forth. The in-game news are the best source for hints on when and where events are being held.
