User Feedback!

Good move, now keep moving in the same direction and make it more like a REAL wiki, please! --ingenting 05:13, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

What changes are you hoping for? --ISD Eshtir 08:55, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

You could start by listening to people with experience. --ingenting 19:11, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, we do that. But if everyone gives feedback on different pages its a bit hard. Also, the issue we seem to face here is that you think we can change every part of the wiki on the fly. Let me tell you this is not the case, we need to suggest it to CCP aswell. --ISD Eshtir 11:53, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

I've been around this "wiki" since it started, and have seen MINIMAL improvements since. Just go look at Wikipedia on how a REAL wiki works. This chop-shop is lame. EDIT: Maybe if you made a page to post suggestions it would not be on different pages --ingenting 10:09, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Here comes my rant, and some/most of it is @CCP, not at the ISD, who I appreciate are trying to do the best job they can. Also, I'm sorry that I've ranted before, but hey. I'm an experienced wiki editor, when I joined EVE, I thought it was kinda cool they had an official wiki, but when I went to use it, it was unusable, the content wasn't there, and RC was almost dead. This, I think comes from a few different factors.
Firstly, an official wiki for a video game takes some doing. I'd like to take an example of one that's worked:
Guild Wars Wiki: wiki.guildwars.com is a wiki for Guild Wars, it was created by ArenaNet as an official alternitive to the already-up and popular Guild Wiki, because of some problems and a community split. This is, to my knowladge, the only official wiki that has really succeeded. And, surprising, the way they did that is not interfere too much. ArenaNet does defiantly have a presence on the wiki (more than CCP has on this wiki), but it's the editors, and the community that come up with the content, and edit it on it's own.
What does Guild Wars Wiki have that Evelopedia doesn't have:
  • Diff links
    • yes, seriously - i'm asking for diff links on RC on a wiki this is a real problem, it's mediawiki, it's possible (I'm not sure what version of mediawiki you're running, but that's mainly because Special:Version isn't accessable, something that should be).
  • A community
    • I see no evidence of a community of editors on evelopedia, people edit something, rarely, and then leave - there is absolutely no
  • A login system separate from the game.
    • This confuses me, For some reason, someone chose logins on the wiki to be built-into logins on the game. This restricts the community in a number of ways:
  1. Members of the community may not want to be represented in-game with their character.
  2. userspace is confused, and you can't add custom javascript or css, which is expected by experenced wiki users.
  • Monobook
    • Again, it looks like eve, nice, it's built-into the site, but you loose out on some great monobook features (such as the WikEd extention). The edit box is much smaller on this skin, and it really doesn't look nice. I'm actually editing this page in monobook (I used the URL hack &useskin=monobook to get there), and the edit box is much nicer.
  • Parser funtions
  • Community direction.
    • Where do you want this wiki to go, ISD should be leading this, please, for the love of God, use the Community portal.
  • Trust
    • This is a wiki, you have to trust your users, with a strong commuinty, and diff links, we can sort vandalism out quickly, trust us to do that, CCP, and don't try to keep us in a closed system, and we'll be better off for it.
  • No autolinker
    • Ogod
Rant complete, feel free to shift the blame Elterviest 23:04, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
Hi, im going to take this feedback and discuss it with the team and CCP. I also expect more changes/improvements to come in the near future. But to discuss them its a bit early. Thank you for your feedback. I´ll get back to you. --ISD Eshtir 13:36, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Any plans on parserfunctions yet? In 2 years ago I was told it'd be added to the suggestions list, and evaluated by the devs. Honestly, trust us a little, and give us this awesome tool. Also, I don't get it - why hide Special:Version? Is this wiki THAT out of date? I remember back in '08, before you shut off the API, your MW install was at least a year to a year and a half out of date.... I sure hope that's not still the one you're running (but, somehow I would not be surprised...). Daquaris 02:26, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Subpages

So I just noticed we don't have subpages enabled. Any particular reason for that? -- Casiella Truza 03:51, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

I´ll ask around for the reason. I dont see a reason why they couldnt be turned on. --ISD Eshtir 13:37, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Update: Why do you want it enabled? Do you have something in mind? --ISD Eshtir 14:29, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Mostly for workspace to draft pages before moving them to "production", so to speak. It's not a huge deal, but it seems like it would help with that sort of thing, the way we use it over at Wikipedia. -- Casiella Truza 15:15, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Having word from CCP, there are no plans to activate it yet. Maybe in the near future.--ISD Eshtir 08:59, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

The SysOp Jungle

Figured I'd repost this (and its attendant forum discussion), since most of it still applies. That said, I think the watershed moment has passed for mass acceptance; from here on out, the only way this Wiki will grow is if the content is more compelling than any other that appears for a given set of search terms in Google. Sansha Kuvakei

Could a moderator review the recent changes to Sansha_Kuvakei, a player has written himself in the history of this NPC, perhaps that should be moderated page given the current event storyline. Wyke Mossari 17:30, 28 July 2010 (UTC).

I've removed the non-cannon information. Wyke Mossari 15:20, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. That page wasn`t moderated and we don`t want to mark more and more pages as moderated, if you find strange additions to aticles like in this case, feel free to correct them like you`ve already done.
